Motorcycle
accidents present an increased risk of fatality over car
or truck accidents. Per mile traveled, the risk of death
in a motorcycle accident is 16 times more likely than
in car or truck accidents. Yet most motorcycle accidents
are the result of the negligent operation of a car or
truck. According to The National Technical Information
Service, 75% of motorcycle accidents involve a passenger
automobile and most occur at intersections.
The number of motorcycle accidents each year has been
rising and the number of fatalities has grown with it.
Studies conducted by The MotorCyclist, exhibit an 11%
increase in motorcycle fatalities in 2003, bringing the
number of deaths that year to 3,592.
While few motorcycle accidents can be attributed to motorcyclist
fault, riders who are untrained and have not acquired
the proper license further increase the potential risks.
Avoiding tailgating and obeying speed limits greatly reduce
the potential dangers, but motorcyclists are often still
at the mercy of passenger cars and trucks on the road.
